In parallel with the graphic identity and communication strategy for the Biennale de Lyon 16th edition, Studio Safar was commissioned to create a mural located in Lyon’s Part-Dieu station; a reimagined floral silk scarf emblazoned by calligraphic banners holding the names of Beirut and Lyon, prompting them not to forget France’s decision to bring the silk industry to Lebanon, which spurred a veritable transformation in the country. The context, events, and long-lasting results were a mixed bag of advancements and tragedies.
Effectively, the silk industry of Lyon is responsible in a huge part for the modernization of Lebanon, but also brought ecological depletion, famine, and mass migration.
This is the largest piece of work Studio Safar has done to date. The illustration was conceptualized and drawn-up by Hatem Imam, and I was then commissioned to render and finalize the illustration.
