Lyon Biennale - Manifesto of Fragility
SCOPE OF WORK
Publication & Editorial Design
The 16th Lyon Biennale: manifesto of fragility positions fragility at the heart of a generative form of resistance that is emboldened by the past, responsive to the present and primed for the future. Conceived as a collective statement, authored through word, image, sound and movement, it calls on a community of resilient voices to draft a manifesto for a world that is blamelessly fragile. The Biennale is structured around three distinct yet inter-connected layers, where fragility and resistance are explored through the lens of the individual, the city, and the world respectively.
For the 16th edition of The Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art, I worked on a series of three publications that emerge in direct contact with the curatorial and critical activities of the Biennale. Each publication covered a different era and a different perspective. During the design process it was important to not think of these publications as singular items, but rather as part of a series, a unit. They followed the same graphic logic, while simulteneously offering something new, and standing on their own.
Given that these publications were an extension of the exhibition, we were heavily inspired by the guiding theme of Lyon’s rich botanical history and herbaria. Additionally, we wanted the layouts to reflect this notion of fragility, which lead to an airy yet intertwined grid system.
Each Publication was published in English and French.
